Crown or bridge: the difference
| Aspect | Crown | Bridge |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Covers and protects one existing tooth | Replaces one or more missing teeth |
| When it is used | Weak, cracked, root-canal-treated or heavily filled teeth | A short gap with sound teeth or implants on either side |
| Teeth involved | The tooth being restored | The neighbouring teeth (or implants) plus the false tooth |
| Effect on other teeth | None beyond the treated tooth | For tooth-supported bridges, neighbouring teeth are shaped for crowns |
| Cleaning | Like a natural tooth | Needs cleaning under the false tooth |
| Alternatives | Large filling or onlay, in some cases | Implant, partial denture, or leaving the gap after discussion |
Your options depend on examination and X-rays; discuss with your dentist which approach suits your teeth.
Common situations
A tooth after root canal
Usually a crown, to protect the treated tooth from splitting under biting forces.
One missing tooth with crowned neighbours
A bridge may make sense if the teeth either side already need crowns.
One missing tooth with untouched neighbours
An implant crown may be considered first, so healthy teeth are not cut down.
Several worn or broken teeth
A combination of crowns, and bridges where teeth are missing, may be planned as a staged treatment.
The process for both
Crowns and bridges follow a similar sequence, usually across two main visits.
- 1
Examination and X-rays
We check the teeth involved, their roots and bone support, and treat any decay or gum problems first.
- 2
Preparation
The tooth or supporting teeth are shaped under local anaesthesia.
- 3
Impression and shade
An impression or digital scan is taken and the shade matched to your teeth.
- 4
Temporary
A temporary crown or bridge protects the teeth while the laboratory work is done.
- 5
Fitting
The final restoration is checked for fit, bite and appearance, then cemented and reviewed.

What affects the cost
The cost of crowns and bridges depends on assessment, the number of units and the material. We give an estimate once the plan is clear.
Number of units
A single crown is one unit; a typical bridge for one missing tooth is three.
Material
Metal-ceramic, zirconia, lithium disilicate and metal restorations differ in cost.
Preliminary treatment
Root canals, build-ups or gum treatment needed beforehand are part of the overall plan.
Aftercare
- Brush twice daily and floss, using a threader or interdental brush under bridges.
- Mild sensitivity after fitting is common; tell us if it lasts more than a few days.
- Let us know if the bite feels high or the restoration feels loose.
- Keep regular check-ups so the edges of crowns and supporting teeth are monitored.

Consults at Shop 24, Safal Park, Nerul EastQuestions about crowns and bridges
Straight answers to what patients ask us most. Still unsure? Just ask.
What is the cost of crowns and bridges?
It depends on the number of units, the material and any treatment needed first. After examination we give a written estimate for the options that suit you.
Can a bridge be made if the neighbouring teeth are weak?
Supporting teeth need healthy roots and enough bone. If they are weak, an implant or partial denture may be safer, and we explain this after X-rays.
Are crowns and bridges removable?
No, both are cemented in place and are not taken out at home. They can be removed by a dentist if they need to be replaced.
Which material should I choose for a crown or bridge?
It depends on the tooth position, your bite and how important appearance is in that area. We discuss the suitable materials and their trade-offs before you decide.
How do I clean under a bridge?
Use a floss threader, super floss or a small interdental brush under the false tooth every day. We demonstrate this at the fitting appointment.
