Options a prosthodontist may discuss

  1. Dental implant(s)A titanium or zirconia root placed in the jaw, topped with a crown — if bone and general health allow.
  2. Tooth-supported bridgeCrowns on the neighbouring teeth hold a replacement tooth across the gap; those teeth are reshaped.

A starting point for your consultation, not a diagnosis. Gum health, bone, bite, medical history and budget decide what is actually suitable.

Relative cost is a general guide only; actual costs depend on assessment. Discuss each option with your dentist.

What may happen if a gap is left

Not every gap needs to be filled, and sometimes leaving one is a reasonable choice. Over time, though, the teeth beside a gap may drift or tilt into the space, and the opposite tooth can over-erupt. This can change your bite and make cleaning harder.

The jawbone where a tooth was lost may also shrink gradually, which can affect later options such as implants. How quickly these changes happen varies from person to person, so we look at your situation rather than giving a general rule.

How we help you decide

Your remaining teeth

Healthy neighbours favour an implant; already crowned or weakened ones may make a bridge sensible.

Bone and gums

X-rays or a CBCT show whether there is enough bone for an implant.

General health

Conditions such as diabetes, and some medicines, can influence which options are safer.

Time and budget

We give estimates and timelines for each option, so you can compare them on the same terms.

What affects the cost of tooth replacement

Tooth replacement cost depends on assessment and on the option you choose. We give estimates for each suitable option side by side.

  • Option chosen

Implants, bridges and dentures differ in procedures, materials and number of visits.

  • Number of teeth missing

The number of missing teeth affects the number of implants or bridge units, or the size of the denture.

  • Preparatory treatment

Extractions, gum treatment, root canals or grafting may be needed first.

  • Materials

Crown, bridge and denture materials vary in cost.

Before your consultation

  • Bring any previous X-rays, scans or dental records you have.
  • Bring a list of your medicines and any recent reports, such as blood sugar.
  • If you wear a denture, bring it even if you no longer use it.
  • Note what matters most to you: appearance, chewing, budget or avoiding surgery.

Questions about missing teeth replacement

Straight answers to what patients ask us most. Still unsure? Just ask.

What is the price of tooth replacement?

It depends on whether you choose an implant, bridge or denture, how many teeth are missing and any treatment needed first. We give estimates for each suitable option after examination.

Which is the most natural-feeling option?

Many patients find implants feel closest to a natural tooth, followed by bridges, but suitability depends on your bone, health and teeth. We explain the trade-offs for your situation.

Is it too late to replace a tooth lost years ago?

Often it is not. Bone may have reduced, which can mean grafting for an implant, but bridges and dentures may still be options.

Do I have to replace a missing back tooth?

Not always. We look at your bite and the neighbouring teeth, and sometimes monitoring the gap is reasonable; we will explain the possible effects either way.

Can I get a temporary tooth while deciding?

Yes, a temporary option such as a small removable denture may be possible while you decide or while healing. We discuss this at consultation.
