How a smile is planned

  1. 1

    Consultation

We discuss what you would like to change and check the health of your teeth and gums.

  2. 2

    Photographs and records

Photographs, impressions or scans record your teeth, lips and face.

  3. 3

    Digital planning

The proposed tooth shapes are planned against your facial proportions and lip line.

  4. 4

    Trial mock-up

A temporary mock-up is placed over your teeth so you can see and feel the planned change, and it can be refined.

  5. 5

    Treatment

Once you are happy with the plan, treatment is carried out in stages appropriate to the options chosen.

What it may involve

Each option is used only if suitable for your teeth. The least invasive effective approach is preferred.

Whitening

Lightening natural tooth colour, often as a first step.

Composite bonding

Adding tooth-coloured material to repair chips or close small gaps.

Veneers

Thin porcelain or composite facings on the front of teeth, usually requiring some enamel reduction.

Crowns

For teeth that are heavily filled, broken or root-canal-treated.

Gum contouring or orthodontics

Sometimes advised before restorative work, with referral where needed.

Limitations

Smile designing works within the limits of your teeth, gums, bite and face, so no particular cosmetic outcome can be guaranteed. Veneers and crowns involve some irreversible tooth reduction, and all restorations need maintenance and may eventually need replacement.

The mock-up stage is there so expectations and the plan are aligned before treatment. If a goal is not realistic or would compromise tooth health, we will say so.

What affects the cost

Smile designing cost depends on assessment and the treatments involved. We give a written estimate after planning.

  • Number of teeth

Treating two front teeth differs greatly from treating eight or ten.

  • Treatment type

Whitening, bonding, veneers and crowns differ in time, materials and laboratory work.

  • Material

Composite and ceramic options vary in cost and longevity.

  • Preparatory treatment

Gum treatment, fillings or orthodontics, if needed first, are part of the plan.

Caring for cosmetic work

  • Brush and floss daily; cosmetic restorations still need healthy gums around them.
  • Avoid biting very hard objects or using front teeth as tools.
  • Wear a night guard if advised for grinding.
  • Keep regular check-ups and professional cleaning.

Questions about smile designing

Straight answers to what patients ask us most. Still unsure? Just ask.

What is the cost of smile designing?

It depends on how many teeth are treated and which treatments are suitable, such as bonding, veneers or crowns. We give an estimate once the plan and mock-up are done.

Can I see the result before treatment?

A trial mock-up shows the planned shape on your own teeth before any tooth is altered. It is a close preview, though the final restorations can differ slightly in colour and detail.

Do veneers damage teeth?

Most porcelain veneers need a small amount of enamel to be removed, which cannot be reversed. We discuss whether a less invasive option such as bonding could meet your goals.

Is smile designing painful?

Planning and mock-ups are not painful. Tooth preparation, when needed, is done under local anaesthesia, and some sensitivity afterwards is common.

How long does it take?

Simple bonding may take one or two visits, while veneers or crowns usually take a few weeks including the planning stage. We give a timeline after consultation.
