When a bridge may be an option

A bridge is one of several ways to replace missing teeth. We compare it with implants and dentures before you decide.

One or two missing teeth

A bridge is usually suited to short gaps with healthy teeth on both sides.

Neighbouring teeth already need crowns

If the teeth beside the gap are heavily filled or weakened, crowning them as part of a bridge may serve both purposes.

Implants not preferred or not suitable

Some patients prefer to avoid surgery, or their bone or health makes implants less suitable.

Wanting a fixed option

Patients who do not want a removable denture often consider a bridge or an implant.

How a three-unit bridge works

The most common bridge replaces one tooth using three joined units: a crown on each neighbouring tooth, called the abutments, and a false tooth, called the pontic, suspended between them.

To fit the crowns, the abutment teeth are shaped under local anaesthesia, which removes some healthy enamel. This is the main trade-off of a conventional bridge, and the reason we assess those teeth carefully before recommending one.

The bridge process

  1. 1

    Assessment

We examine the gap and take X-rays of the abutment teeth to check their roots, bone support and any old fillings.

  2. 2

    Abutment preparation

The supporting teeth are shaped under local anaesthesia to make room for the crowns.

  3. 3

    Impression and shade

An impression or scan records the prepared teeth and bite, and the shade is matched.

  4. 4

    Temporary bridge

A temporary bridge protects the prepared teeth and fills the gap while the final bridge is made.

  5. 5

    Fitting and review

The final bridge is checked for fit and bite, cemented, and reviewed after a short period.

Implant-supported bridges

When three or more teeth are missing in a row, two implants may support a bridge across the gap, without crowning any natural teeth. This depends on bone volume and general health, which are checked with X-rays and usually a CBCT scan.

What affects the cost of a bridge

Bridge cost depends on assessment of the gap and supporting teeth, and on the material. We give an estimate after examination.

  • Number of units

Each crown and false tooth in the bridge is a unit, so longer bridges cost more.

  • Material

Metal-ceramic, zirconia and other materials differ in laboratory work and cost.

  • Treatment of abutment teeth

A root canal or core build-up on a supporting tooth, if needed, adds to the plan.

  • Tooth- or implant-supported

An implant-supported bridge includes surgery, implant components and scans.

Caring for a bridge

  • Clean under the false tooth daily with a floss threader, super floss or an interdental brush.
  • Brush the abutment teeth carefully at the gum line, where decay can start unnoticed.
  • Avoid biting very hard objects with the bridge.
  • Attend regular check-ups so the supporting teeth and gums can be examined.

Questions about dental bridges

Straight answers to what patients ask us most. Still unsure? Just ask.

Have another question?Message us on WhatsApp
What is the cost of a bridge for teeth?

The cost depends on how many units the bridge has, the material and any treatment the supporting teeth need. We provide an estimate after examination and X-rays.

Is a bridge better than an implant?

Neither is better for everyone. A bridge avoids surgery but requires shaping the neighbouring teeth, while an implant leaves them untouched but needs enough bone and a longer timeline.

Does getting a bridge hurt?

The teeth are numbed with local anaesthesia during preparation, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Some sensitivity for a few days after is common.

How long does a bridge take?

Usually two main visits a week or two apart, with a temporary bridge in between. More time may be needed if the supporting teeth need a root canal first.

Can food get stuck under a bridge?

Some food can collect under the false tooth, which is why daily cleaning with a floss threader or interdental brush is important. We show you how at the fitting visit.
