What blood pressure care covers

Accurate clinic readings

Blood pressure is measured after you have rested, sometimes more than once, and in both arms at the first visit.

Reviewing home readings

Readings from your home monitor are checked against clinic values to understand your true pattern.

Looking for causes and effects

Tests may be advised to check the kidneys, heart rhythm, sugar and cholesterol, which are linked to blood pressure.

Medicine review

Doses, timing and side effects are reviewed, and changes are made gradually where needed.

Lifestyle guidance

Practical advice on salt, activity, weight, alcohol, smoking and sleep.

When to get your blood pressure checked

Many people with high blood pressure feel completely well.

A high reading elsewhere

A value flagged at a pharmacy, office health camp or another clinic is worth confirming.

Family history

A parent or sibling with high blood pressure, heart disease or stroke.

Diabetes or kidney disease

These conditions make regular blood pressure checks more important.

Headaches or dizziness

These are not reliable signs of high blood pressure, but are reasonable reasons to check.

On medicines but unsure they are working

If home readings stay high, or you feel light-headed after starting treatment.

How a blood pressure visit works

  1. 1

    Consultation

Your readings so far, symptoms, family history and daily routine.

  2. 2

    History and examination

Rested blood pressure measurement, pulse, weight and a general examination.

  3. 3

    Tests if needed

Kidney function, urine, sugar, cholesterol or an ECG may be advised, depending on assessment.

  4. 4

    Plan

Lifestyle changes, medicines, or both, with a clear explanation of each.

  5. 5

    Follow-up

A review to compare home and clinic readings and adjust treatment if needed.

How to check blood pressure at home

A validated upper-arm monitor gives the most useful home readings.

  • Avoid tea, coffee, smoking and exercise for 30 minutes beforehand, and empty your bladder.
  • Sit with your back supported, feet flat on the floor and arm resting at heart level; rest for five minutes.
  • Wrap the cuff on bare skin, about two finger-widths above the elbow crease, and do not talk during the reading.
  • Take two readings a minute apart, morning and evening, and note both with the date and time.
  • Bring the monitor to the clinic once so it can be checked against a clinic reading.

What to bring

  1. Your home blood pressure log, or the monitor itself if it stores readings.
  2. All current medicines, including painkillers and cold remedies, which can raise blood pressure.
  3. Recent blood reports, ECG or echo reports if you have them.
  4. Previous prescriptions from any doctor.

Do not wait for an appointment

Warning signs that need emergency care, not an appointment

Do not wait for a clinic appointment if any of these happen. Go to the nearest emergency department or call 112.

112 India emergency
  • Chest pain or pressure.
  • A sudden, severe headache, especially with vomiting or blurred vision.
  • Weakness or numbness on one side of the body, facial droop or difficulty speaking.
  • Breathlessness, particularly at rest or when lying flat.
  • Confusion or fainting.
Home readings, written down, are often more telling than one clinic value.

FAQs

Questions about blood pressure care

Straight answers to what patients ask us most. Still unsure? Just ask.

Have another question?Message us on WhatsApp
My reading was high once. Do I have hypertension?

Not necessarily. Blood pressure varies through the day and can be raised by stress, pain or a rushed visit. A diagnosis is usually based on repeated readings, often including home or ambulatory monitoring.

Will I have to take blood pressure tablets for life?

Many people do need long-term treatment, but this depends on the cause, your readings and how lifestyle changes work for you. Medicines should never be stopped without discussing it with your doctor.

Which home monitor should I buy?

A clinically validated, automatic upper-arm monitor with the right cuff size is generally preferred over wrist devices. Bring it to the clinic so its readings can be compared.

Is Dr. Roy a cardiologist?

No. Dr. Swetabh S. Roy is a consultant physician with an MD in General Medicine. If heart-related tests or a cardiologist's opinion are needed, a referral is made.

Can I reduce blood pressure without medicines?

Reducing salt, staying active, losing excess weight, limiting alcohol and stopping smoking may all lower blood pressure. Whether that is enough on its own depends on your readings and overall risk.
