What a maxillofacial prosthesis is

A maxillofacial prosthesis is a custom-made replacement for missing parts of the jaw, palate or face. It does not replace surgery; it is made after surgical or medical treatment to help with function and appearance.

We do not perform jaw or facial surgery at this clinic. Our role is the prosthetic stage, working alongside your surgeon, oncologist or referring team, and with their findings and timing.

Who it may help

Suitability is decided after examination and discussion with your treating team.

After jaw or palate surgery

Patients who have had part of the upper jaw or palate removed, for example after tumour surgery.

After facial trauma

People with tissue or tooth loss after an accident, once surgical care is complete or stable.

Congenital defects

Some patients with cleft palate or other developmental defects, alongside their surgical and orthodontic care.

Loss of facial structures

In selected cases, facial prostheses for missing parts such as an ear, nose or eye region, depending on assessment.

Types of prostheses

Obturators

A plate that closes an opening in the palate, helping with speech, swallowing and eating. They may be made in stages as healing progresses.

Mandibular prostheses

Prostheses that help restore teeth and function after part of the lower jaw is affected.

Facial prostheses

Custom-coloured replacements for missing facial parts, made only where clinically appropriate.

Supportive appliances

Appliances that may be advised around radiotherapy or surgery, as requested by the treating team.

How care is coordinated

  1. 1

    Referral or records

We review surgical notes, scans and the referral from your surgeon or oncology team.

  2. 2

    Examination

The area, remaining teeth and tissues are examined, and the clinician confirms whether a prosthesis is suitable.

  3. 3

    Coordinated plan

Timing and design are agreed with your treating team, as healing and any further treatment affect the plan.

  4. 4

    Impressions and trial

Impressions are taken carefully, and a trial prosthesis is checked for fit, speech and comfort.

  5. 5

    Fitting and adjustments

The prosthesis is fitted and adjusted over several visits as tissues change.

  6. 6

    Long-term review

Regular reviews are needed, and prostheses may need relining or remaking over time.

What affects the cost

Cost depends on assessment, the type of prosthesis and how many stages are needed. We provide an estimate after examination and discussion with your treating team.

  • Type of prosthesis

Obturators, mandibular and facial prostheses differ greatly in complexity.

  • Staging

Some prostheses are made in interim and definitive stages as healing progresses.

  • Materials and laboratory work

Custom shading and specialised materials affect cost.

  • Adjustments and relines

Ongoing changes in tissue may need relines or remakes over time.

Living with a prosthesis

  • Clean the prosthesis daily as instructed, and keep the area beneath it clean.
  • Report sore spots, changes in fit or difficulty with speech or swallowing promptly.
  • Continue all follow-up appointments with your surgeon or oncology team.
  • Bring updated reports to each review, as further treatment may change the plan.

Questions about maxillofacial prosthesis

Straight answers to what patients ask us most. Still unsure? Just ask.

Do you perform the surgery as well?

No. We provide the prosthetic part of care and work alongside your surgeon or oncology team, who manage the surgical treatment.

Do I need a referral?

A referral is helpful but not always required. Please bring your surgical notes, scans and any letters from your treating team so the clinician can confirm whether a prosthesis is suitable.

When can an obturator be made after surgery?

Timing depends on the surgery, healing and any radiotherapy. Some patients receive an interim obturator early, followed by a definitive one later, as agreed with the surgical team.

Will the prosthesis help with speech and eating?

Many patients find an obturator improves speech and eating, but results vary with the size and location of the defect. We explain realistic expectations after examination.

What does it cost?

It depends on the type of prosthesis, the number of stages and the materials needed. We give an estimate after examination and reviewing your records.
