When a crown may be needed

After a root canal

Back teeth in particular can become brittle after root canal treatment, and a crown may be advised to reduce the risk of fracture.

Cracked or broken teeth

A crown can hold a cracked tooth together and rebuild a tooth that has broken, if enough sound structure remains.

Large or failing fillings

When a filling takes up most of the tooth, a crown may protect what is left better than another filling.

Implant crowns

The visible tooth on top of a dental implant is a crown, designed to fit the implant and your bite.

Worn or discoloured teeth

In selected cases crowns can restore teeth worn down by grinding or badly discoloured, after other options are considered.

Crown materials compared

There is no single best material. The choice depends on where the tooth is, how you bite, how much tooth remains and how it needs to look.

How a crown is made

  1. 1

    Assessment

We examine the tooth and take an X-ray to check the root, the surrounding bone and whether any earlier treatment is needed.

  2. 2

    Tooth preparation

Under local anaesthesia, the tooth is shaped to make room for the crown, and the core is built up if needed.

  3. 3

    Impression or scan

An impression or digital scan records the prepared tooth and your bite, and the shade is chosen.

  4. 4

    Temporary crown

A temporary crown protects the tooth while the laboratory makes the final one.

  5. 5

    Fitting

The final crown is checked for fit, bite and appearance before it is cemented, and adjusted if needed.

What affects the cost of a dental crown

Crown cost depends on assessment of the tooth and the material chosen, so we confirm it after examination rather than quoting a flat price.

  • Crown material

Metal-ceramic, zirconia, lithium disilicate and full-metal crowns involve different materials and laboratory work.

  • Work before the crown

A root canal, core build-up or post may be needed first and is charged separately.

  • Number of teeth

Several crowns, or crowns joined as a bridge, change the overall estimate.

  • Implant or natural tooth

Implant crowns use additional components and differ in cost from crowns on natural teeth.

Looking after a crown

  • Brush twice daily and floss, paying attention to where the crown meets the gum.
  • Avoid biting very hard foods or objects, and do not use crowned teeth to open packets.
  • If you grind your teeth at night, ask whether a night guard is advisable.
  • Some sensitivity for a few days after fitting is common; tell us if it persists or the bite feels high.
  • Keep up regular check-ups so the edges of the crown and the tooth underneath can be monitored.

What is the price of a dental crown in India?

Crown prices vary widely with the material, the laboratory and any work needed before the crown. We give you an estimate for the suitable options after examining the tooth.

Is crown preparation painful?

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthesia, so most patients feel vibration and pressure rather than pain. Mild sensitivity or gum soreness for a few days afterwards is common.

How many visits does a crown take?

Usually two main visits: one to prepare the tooth and take an impression, and one to fit the final crown. Extra visits may be needed if a root canal or core build-up is required first.

Do I need a crown after every root canal?

Not always. Crowns are often advised for back teeth because they take heavy biting forces, while some front teeth may be restored with a filling; it depends on how much tooth remains.

How long does a crown last?

There is no fixed lifespan. With good brushing, flossing and regular check-ups, many crowns serve well for years, but the tooth underneath can still decay or the crown can chip.
